Originally I was just looking for a mattress pad to cover my old mattress and make it more comfortable. I ended up deciding to buy this 8inch mattress and use it like a mattress pad or just a mattress on top of another mattress. First, the box is extremely heavy but that is not a flaw. I just though that I should mention it. Upon opening the package and unwrapping the mattress, it started to expand quickly. I think it took less than a full day to reach the full 8 inches. It did have a strange smell but it was not offensive. I would not describe it as a chemical smell but there is an odor. I have had the mattress now for about a month and I can still smell it but it is very faint. It is memory foam and I am not a memory foam expert but it molds to your body and then expands when you get up or changes positions.
